YouBelong Pediatrics in Suwanee, GA welcomes newborns for their first checkup within 2 days of leaving the hospital. Board-certified pediatrician Dr. Rabia Akbar reviews the hospital records, checks your baby's weight, feeding, jaundiceand helps your family through the first weeks at home.
First visit: within 2-3 days of hospital discharge, or sooner if the hospital asks
Early checkups: first week, 1 month, and 2 months, plus additional weight check visits if your baby needs them

Meet us first. Book a free prenatal meet-and-greet with Dr. Akbar to see the office and ask questions
Name us at the hospital. Tell the hospital that YouBelong Pediatrics is your baby's pediatrician and ask them to send the discharge summary to us (fax: 833-764-6081).
Call us before discharge from Hospital. We'll book your baby's first visit.
Plan your baby's insurance. Most employer plans require you to add a newborn within 30 days of birth. Check your plan's deadline. If you have Georgia Medicaid, report the birth to your plan so your baby's coverage can start.
Install the car seat. Babies ride home rear-facing. Strong4Life (Children's Healthcare of Atlanta) has a helpful car seat guide .
Hospital records review: Dr Akbar does an extensive review of the baby's birth record including results of new born screens, vaccinations, medications and any blood work
Weight check: most babies lose a little weight in the first days and are back to birth weight by about 2 weeks. We make sure your baby is on track.
Jaundice check: we look at your baby's skin and eyes and test bilirubin when needed.
Feeding check: how often your baby eats, latch and bottle questions, and wet and dirty diaper counts.
Full exam: heart, lungs, hips, eyes, umbilical cord, and circumcision care.
Vaccines: if your baby didn't get the hepatitis B vaccine in the hospital, we can give it. The AAP recommends it at birth.
Safe sleep: on the back, on a flat, firm surface of their own, in your room but not in your bed.
A check-in on you: the early weeks are hard. We ask how you're doing, including screening for postpartum depression, and connect you with help if you need it.

Diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes
A rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher in a baby under 3 months. Call day or night.
Yellow skin that spreads to the belly or legs, or a baby who is too sleepy to wake for feeds
Fewer wet diapers than expected, poor feeding, or forceful or green vomiting
Trouble breathing or blue lips. Call 911.
Within 2-3 days of leaving the hospital. Call us before discharge so we can schedule it and request the records.
The hospital's pediatric team cares for your baby until discharge. Dr. Akbar's care starts at the first office visit.
Yes. A newborn can be seen in the office safely. We sanitize all surfaces before and after every encounter.
Mild jaundice is common during a baby's first week and usually resolves on its own. However, in some newborns, jaundice levels can rise quickly to dangerous levels within the first four to five days. We will check for jaundice at your baby's first visit and recheck or run tests if necessary.
