Pierce. It takes seconds. Most babies cry briefly and settle quickly with a cuddle or a feed.
Go home with aftercare instructions. The starter earrings stay in for 6 weeks.
Wash your hands before touching the ears.
Clean the front and back of each earlobe twice a day.
Leave the starter earrings in for 6 weeks. After that, keep wearing earrings most of the time for about 6 months so the holes don't close.
Avoid pools, lakes, and hot tubs until the piercing has healed, usually 4 to 6 weeks.
Keep hair products, lotions, and perfume away from the ears.
For babies: check every day that the earring backs are secure. A loose earring or back is a choking hazard.
Spreading redness, swelling, warmth, pus, an earring back sinking into the skin, or a fever. Most minor irritation clears with cleaning, but an infection needs to be seen.
There's no single right age. Many families choose the early months, after the first tetanus-containing vaccines and before babies start grabbing at their ears. Others wait until their child asks and can help care for the piercing. We're happy to talk it through.
It's a quick pinch. Most children cry for a moment and settle quickly.
