Coughing is one of the most common reasons parents bring their children to the doctor. The good news? Most coughs are part of the body’s natural defense system and resolve on their own.
What’s Behind That Cough?
Children cough for many reasons, and most are not serious. Common causes include:
- Colds and viral infections (these are the most frequent culprits)
- Allergies or post-nasal drip
- Asthma
- Environmental irritants like smoke or strong smells
When to Take a Closer Look
Call your pediatrician if your child:
- Has a cough that lasts more than 3 weeks
- Is under 4 years old and coughing persistently
- Has trouble breathing, wheezing, or seems unusually tired
- Has a high fever or is coughing up blood
- Makes a barking sound when coughing (this could be croup)
- Is having difficulty sleeping, eating, or playing because of the cough
What You Can Do at Home
For mild coughs, a few simple steps can go a long way:
- Keep your child well-hydrated
- Use a cool-mist humidifier in their room
- Offer honey for children over 1 year (it can soothe the throat)
- Avoid over-the-counter cough medicines for children under 4 unless your doctor recommends them
